Do you know about the North Valley Animal Disaster Group?

Get to know the North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG). NVADG was activated for the Humboldt fire and the Ophir fire. Trained volunteers were evacuating animals Wednesday through Saturday during the fire. Each member of the NVADG is extensively trained in fire safety, radio communication, and have the right protective gear to be going into fire areas. The have communication with incident command and are allowed into closed areas. For future incidents know their hotline number (store it in your cell phone). There hotline number is: 530-895-0000.

Every single call they received during this incident was responded to. Not a single one was missed or passed over. They had enough trained volunteers they were just waiting for the calls to come in so they could go to work. NVADG consists of volunteers that give up weekends and evenings all throughout the year to attend trainings in the event that they will have to respond to incidents like this. Many have years of training and have participated in large disaster preparedness drills with many other emergency groups such as fire departments, CDF, etc... Each volunteer uses their own vehicle, trailer and buys their own fuel. They housed over 400 small animals, evacuated small animals, and evacuated countless large animals including horses, llamas, and alpacas. For more information about NVADG see there website at www.nvadg.org

Several private vendors have made some t-shirts that commemorate the fire. One of them put the NVADG logo on them and will donate $5 to NVADG for every $20 shirt that they sell.  You can view and purchase a shirt at: www.firefighterup.com

Where in this world can man find nobility without pride, friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity?

Here, where grace is laced with muscle, and strength by gentleness confined.

He serves without servility, has fought without enmity.

There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent; nothing as quick, nothing more patient.

The world's past has been borne on his back. We are his heirs; he is our inheritance.

The horse.

- Ronald Duncan in Ode to the Horse
